Former PhD Students

Kathryn Parsley, Ph.D.

Dr. Kathryn Parsley graduated from the PhD program in the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Memphis in 2021. Her dissertation was titled Exploring New Approaches to the Problem of Plant Awareness Disparity in Undergraduate Students. As a part of her work on this project, she also redefined the field formerly known as Plant Blindness – now called Plant Awareness Disparity.

Parsley, K.M. (2021). Plant Awareness Disparity: Looking to the Past to Inform the Future. Plant Science Bulletin, 67(2) 2021, 94-99.

Parsley, K.M.* (2020). Plant awareness disparity: A case for renaming plant blindness. Plants, People, Planet. 00: 1–4. DOI: 10.1002/ppp3.10153.

Kathryn earned a BSc in Biology at Cameron University in Lawton, OK and an MS in Biology at Texas State University in San Marcos, TX.

While in the lab, Kathryn was awarded two grants from the University of Memphis Center for Biodiversity, won 2nd place in the graduate student poster competition at the 2019 National Association of Biology Teachers (NABT) conference, and was selected a Plantae Fellow through the American Society of Plant Biologist (ASPB). Kathryn was an author on multiple publications in the lab (see Publications page).

After earning the PhD, Kathryn went on to work as a Postdoctoral Researcher and then as a Consultant for the Donald Danforth Plant Science Center in St. Louis, MO. She is currently working as a Research Development Associate at Washington University in St. Louis, MO.
